Re-sealing polish For An Adjusted Cerec Zirconia Restoration

Sirona’s Cerec ceramic milling system is one of the most coveted systems in both dental laboratories and dental operatories across the globe. This system has become so popular that if you were to ask any dentist in the world to name the top 3 milling systems, Cerec would most definitely be on their list.

But with all of the notoriety that the Cerec system carries, and as with all CAD/CAM and traditionally fabricated restorations, there is a constant need for various types of adjustments to ensure proper fitting of the restoration.

While many other companies offer inefficient paint on or spray on glazing techniques to re-seal and re-polish CAD/CAM generated restorations, such as Cerec or pressed and porcelain fused to metal types, they seem to appear to provide a surface smoothness that is safe for the opposing dentition but don’t seem to offer a long term solution.

There have been two recent studies exposing the quickest and most effective method of re-polishing a Cerec restoration. Both offer a final result that is easy to accomplish and extremely safe for the patient.

The first, a recent abstract published by Dr. D. Nathanson, Department of Restorative Sciences Bio Materials, Boston University, Boston, Massachusetts, reported that “at 600,000 strokes, the polished zirconia caused significantly less wear to enamel than either glazed Zirconia, Ceramco porcelain or Cerec MarkII. The polished zirconia remained unchanged, but the glazed zirconia showed significant loss of the glazed layer.”

It was reported that the polish used in the Boston University study was Dental Ventures Zircon-Brite.

The second, a study conducted in Kobe, Japan, showed that polishing adjusted areas on Cerec zirconia restorations using Zircon-Brite with a soft bristle brush reduced surface roughness DRASTICALLY in no more than 15 seconds of polishing time. All while providing a safe, non-damaging surface smoothness.

Zircon-Brite, the polishing product reportedly used in both studies offers advantages outside of re-sealing and re-polishing the adjusted areas of a Cerec type or other restoration.

Zircon-Brite has been recognized as the perfect companion to all types of ceramic restorations including Zirconia, Lithium Disilicate and Composites. This product also offers a significant simplification of technique for Cerec type or pressed IPS e.max® users by eliminating the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th glaze cycle that is typically required to complete an IPS e.max® restoration.

In other words…

Zircon-Brite provides ideal surface texture and high shine to under-glazed Lithium Disilicate restorations. Zircon-Brite has also been selected by one of the most prestigious third party evaluators as one of the TOP DENTAL PRODUCTS OF 2010 and recognized as a proven classic of 2011.

Dr. Tony Soileau of Lafayette, Louisiana says:

“Having to adjust ceramic and remove it’s beautiful glaze is very disappointing. Having the ability to easily polish it back to a glaze-like shine is incredible. Now being able to use Dental Ventures of America’s Zircon-Brite on all ceramics including Lithium Disilicate, Composite and Temporaries is miraculous. Zircon-Brite does all of this and is extremely affordable.”

Zircon-Brite is available in a 20 gram jar designed for laboratory use and a 6 gram syringe for use in chair-side applications. Contact Dental Ventures of America to order or learn more about it’s application and use or click here to order from our web store.

TranSil – Transparent Matrix Material

“TranSil” is a quick-setting, two-part, transparent silicone (vinylpolysiloxane with high final hardness) material designed to be automatically mixed and expressed from a dispensing instrument normally used for impression materials.

Its unique clear character offers opportunities to simplify many clinical and laboratory procedures.

As one studies the images below, visualize the variety of procedures that would be facilitated by the use of “TranSil.”

For example, think of the benefits of “TranSil’s” translucency in fabricating perfect temporaries directly, or on a model with the elimination of several steps that are now required.

Product Benefits

Molding one, quick matrix on the bucco-labial and occlusal surfaces (with only a slight amount on the lingual) can serve to:

  • Quickly and efficiently fabricate a temporary (any composite can be easily cured directly through “TranSil”). “TranSil’s” clear character can ensure that any acrylic is ‘packed thoroughly’ and is completely filling the mold prior to curing. Note: Curing composites in an anaerobic atmosphere eliminates the dispersion layer and results in a denser, smoother surface that is easier to polish.
  • Provide an extremely accurate bite-registration. Improper bite relationships can be readily seen and realigned. The original bite registration, because of its clear nature, can subsequently be utilized in the laboratory for simplifying many procedures. (Figure 1)
  • Quickly replicate any original crown form into either wax, acrylic, composite, porcelain or other modeling material. The original tooth on the left was totally duplicated in four minutes. (Figure 2)
  • Any tooth or other dentition segment can be replicated in minutes. (Figure 3 and 3A)
  • Provide an opportunity to reproduce and transfer the original shape and occlusal anatomy of a patient’s teeth into either wax, composite or porcelain. Note how such a form can be utilized to view exactly how much space is provided for the final restoration. (Figure 4)
  • Simplify your staff’s daily challenges.

Product Information
We offer some of the following snapshots and minimal instructions as a stimulus to build a springboard of ideas as to how “TranSil” can serve to simplify your day.

FABRICATION OF TEMPORARY RESTORATIONS – The utilization of TranSil greatly simplifies the fabrication of Bite Registrations as well as Temporary Restorations.

Star Porcelain Brushes

Description & Application

Being in a position to introduce product that virtually takes a technique to another level is very exciting. That is exactly what the STAR BRUSH Line does! They provide a level of performance with regard to the tip integrity, moisture management, porcelain manipulation, and durability far beyond any other brush on the market.
As our brush motto indicates, “Brushes are brushes, but ours are STARS!”

Dental ceramists build porcelain to shape, prior to placement into the firing furnace, either using a brush or they “stack” porcelain utilizing a metal instrument. For those that build with a brush, their “tool of choice” becomes very, very significant as in ‘of critical importance.’ It would not be incorrect to state, “their search for the ideal brush is a life-long endeavor.”

The evolution of the acceptance and popularity of ceramic brushes has ‘pretty much been dependent and driven by the
ability of brushes to display these features. In general, the more expensive brushes, supposedly manufactured in Germany have grown to be accepted as the standard.

However, those customers having tried DVA’s new “STAR BRUSHES” report they excel in all areas of performance! Hence, we enter the market with a great opportunity, always keeping in mind, the acceptance of any dental product, and brushes would certainly be included, is a very personal decision. We probably cannot please everyone, but we certainly can please most!

Types of Brushes

Brushes traditionally could be divided into two general classifications:
1. Synthetic (Mostly made from nylon)

2. Natural (Produced from the hair fibers of animals) The ‘natural’ brushes have evolved into the acceptance of two general classifications of brushes – Red Sable and Kolinsky Sable. Red Sable brushes, so referred to because of their ‘reddish-brown color,’ are produced from the weasel animal; while the Kolinsky brush is made from a mink (also of the weasel family) that is native to Siberia and northeastern China, where the extremely cold weather causes the development of a thick, long coat of hair. Only hairs from the tail of these animals are used in making dental brushes.

Comparative physical characteristics of the two types of brushes can be described as follows:

Hair Fiber Thick; good tip; ‘spindle’ shape Thin; better tip; ‘belly shape’
Color Rather Dark More ‘yellowish’
Flexibility/”Bounce-back” Best Good
Liquid Retention Good Better
Luster Good Better
Shape of Head “Spindle-like” “Barrel-like”
Smoothness Good Better, shiny and smooth

It is IMPORTANT TO NOTE that while the KOLINSKY brushes are, in general, more expensive, the acceptance of any ceramic brush is a function of its performance as perceived by the individual using it!

DVA offers those brushes as perceived as the ‘most critical’ with respect t building porcelain in the highest quality of Kolinsky fibers available. Most importantly, the source of the fibers for our manufacturer, based upon their generations of involvement with the manufacturing of fine brushes, is consistent.

There is one other brush that is included in our line – a rather large brush, shaped in a thick, somewhat ‘shovel-like shape” that is used to ‘withdraw’ moisture from the porcelain prior to placement into the firing oven. This brush is used in a ‘whipping motion’ to cause any moisture to come to the surface and be ‘whipped away.’ This action also condenses or packs the porcelain to some degree.

Again, reports from our testing customers have indicated this particular DVA brush, made from the hairs of the GRAY SQUIRREL, is much more effective and works faster than the brushes previously available. It seems to be somewhat firmer and thicker than the competitive brushes. It is fast, quick and effective!

It is very important to note that while many, many different brushes are on the market, DVA’s focus must not be on competitive brushes, but rather the PERFORMANCE of our “STAR LINE!” They just do what porcelain brushes should do – “They Perform,” and they do so like STARS, and they are PRICED COMPETITIVELY! THAT is what we need to sell! Just provide the customer with ASSURANCE, ASSURANCE, ASSURANCE that they are going to be happy with DVA’s STAR brushes.

Descriptions & Prices

Dental Ventures will offer a broad line of brushes to meet all of the demands of the ceramist. We will NOT offer every size, but we will offer a variety that seems to fulfill the needs of most technicians.

We will offer sizes 00/0/6 in RED SABLE, and the numbers 8 and 10 in the Kolinsky style.

Dip N’ Cast Wax

Dip N’ Cast is a wax used for dipping and coating dies. The wax ingots are available in two consistencies and each consistency in two colors. Firm consistency is available in Green and a Yellow color and the Flexible consistency in Green and Orange colors.

Product Application:

Dip N’ Cast is a wax that is melted to a liquid state in a heated dipping pot at a preset temperature. It is used to apply a uniform layer of wax in a given thickness desired by the technician to the surface of a die that is dipped into and quickly removed from the liquid wax. The choice of wax consistency and color is the decision of the technician.

Compared to competitive products, DVA’s Dip N’ Cast is characterized by:

  1. A lack of shrinkage such that generally, the re-sealing of die margins can be eliminated.
  2. The wax pattern can be removed, replaced and reseated without having to seal or reseal the margins.
  3. Demonstrates incredible consistency in dipping thickness and memory retention.

SPECIAL NOTE: Whereas a single, normal dipping thickness would provide a “normal PFM coping” layer of typically four- tenths of a millimeter in thickness, ONLY the very unique formula of DVA’s Dip N’ Cast allows the Double Dipping to quickly and uniformly obtain the recommended eight-tenths of a millimeter desired for the fabrication of Press-Ceramic Copings. “Double Dipping” without changing dip-pot temperatures or problems with wax layering! A BIG BENEFIT!

Product Benefits

  • Increases Productivity
  • Improves cleanliness and fit of castings
  • Eliminates necessity to seal margins
  • Insures ceramic compatibility
  • Allows ‘Double-Dipping’ for Unique Formula Cast Ceramic Copings

Product Features

  • Consistent dipping thickness
  • Eliminates necessity to seal margins
  • Trims extremely sharp and clean
  • Lack of internal shrinkage lines
  • Reduced shrinkage
  • High-quality, ash-free formula

Jerry’s WOW Solution

Description & Application

DVA’S “Jerry’s WOW Solution” consists of a silicone-based liquid packaged in a 16-ounce bottle designed for use as a gypsum-to-gypsum separator. The product is characterized by its lack of odor, incredibly clean separation capabilities and economical price.

Jerry’s “WOW Solution” derives its name from its outstanding performance and economy. Nothing separates gypsum like “WOW Solution.” It’s just a “WOW” product!

Background of Product Use and Competition

There are three basic types of dental separators:

. Acrylic Separators – designed as a tin-foil substitute. Tin foil was the original separator medium used to separate denture acrylic from the stone model during polymerization procedures. Many companies now sell a separator for this procedure. DVA’s “Acrylic-Plaster Separator” (“APS”) represents a separator of this class.

. Crown and Bridge Separators – designed to separate wax patterns or porcelain margins from stone models. DVA’s “Very Special Separator” is a separator of this class.

. Gypsum Separators – designed to separate dental stone from either stone or plaster. The “WOW Solution” represents this type of separator. Gypsum separators have three basic uses:

i. They are used to separate halves of a denture flask. Vaseline (as well as other competitive products) has also been used extensively for this procedure.

ii. For the mounting of articulating plaster to full or partial denture models for use during the setting up of teeth during the fabrication of the wax pattern. Again, Vaseline and other products have been used for this operation.

iii. To separate the first, arch pour and the second, base pour of a standard, ‘pindex-type model. It is this widely-used application for which we anticipate DVA will concentrate its sales efforts on behalf of the “WOW Solution.”

WOW Solution PIM

The market leader used for these applications appears to be ‘Super-Sep’ by Kerr Manufacturing. “Super-Sep” is an alcohol-based liquid characterized by an extremely strong ‘alcoholic’ odor. It

is also, compared to DVA’s new product, rather expensive. DVA offers twice the volume at virtually half the price.

As successful in the marketplace as it is, we do NOT believe ‘Super-Sep’ is as effective in its separation ability as DVA’s WOW Solution! Need we say more!

Product Benefits

  • DVA’s “WOW Solution” gypsum separator
  • Totally Eliminates Odors from the working environment – it is totally odorless!
  • Improves Separation of gypsum products – it simply performs better than competitive products! “WOW” only requires one, single application, and it
  • Eliminates the need to re-soak dry models prior to making second pours.
  • Saves Money – One receives ‘twice the product for half the price!’
